What Are Embroidery Design Files?

If you have a new embroidery machine or want one, you're probably thinking about all the gorgeous designs you can embroider with it. Embroidery machines usually have built-in designs. But sooner or later, you're going to want to create a project that requires something different. You're going to have to know how to get designs, which embroidery data format is compatible with your machine, how to get them into your computer and transfer them to your embroidery machine. This article explains what embroidery design files are and how to use them.

Where Do I Get Embroidery Designs?

You can check out your local embroidery and sewing machine dealers. They might have some designs on CDs or embroidery memory cards. The disadvantage is that they don't have much of a selection. But if you're there anyway, it won't hurt to look. You might just find the perfect design.

The Internet is the most common place to find embroidery designs. You can order them on memory cards or CDs, but most people prefer to instantly download them as embroidery design files. You can choose from a huge number of designs in many different styles and themes.

Most designers also have free samples that you can try before you buy one. It's good to check out a designer's work first because there are all levels of quality out there. Sometimes you can even find a free design that's right for your project.
If you buy embroidery memory cards, you just stick the card into the card slot on your embroidery machine. Embroidery designs on CDs can be copied to your computer. To download them from the Internet, you click the download link that the designer provides. Or sometimes, they'll send you the link by email.

Choose Embroidery Design Files Compatible With Your Machine

Embroidery designs come in a lot of different formats. Each embroidery machine model can only read embroidery data in certain formats. You can tell what format the file is by the "file extension." The file extension is the last three characters in the file name after the period. For example, my Brother SE400 can read .pes files. You have to be certain to get the format that is compatible with your particular machine. Otherwise, you won't be able to use it.

Common Embroidery Data File Types And Machine Brands

Here is a list of machine brands and the common file types that they can read.
  • .art -- Bernina
  • .dst -- Tajima
  • .exp -- Melco, Bernina
  • .hus -- Viking Husqvarna
  • .jef -- Janome
  • .pcs -- Pfaff
  • .psc -- Baby Lock, Bernina, Brother
  • .pes -- Baby Lock, Bernina, Brother
  • .sew -- Janome
  • .shv -- Viking Husqvarna
  • .vip -- Viking Husqvarna
  • .vp3 -- Pfaff
  • .xxx -- Singer
You'll notice that some brands are listed several times. That's because different models use different formats. For example, the home embroidery machines use one format and the commercial machines use a different format. Check your user manual to find out what formats your machine will read before downloading embroidery files.

Most design sites offer a variety of formats to fit the various common machine models. They will either tell you the format or let you choose the one that works for you. Downloading the correct format is much safer than than trying to convert the format later. Conversion just adds an extra step to the process and another opportunity for things to go wrong.

.ZIP Files

Sometimes embroidery design files come packaged in a ".zip" file. The file can contain several of the real files. You must unzip it before you can use it. Just double-click the file to unzip it. Then you'll see a folder containing the embroidery files with the extension you need.

Get Fast and Impeccable Designs Through Embroidery Digitizing

Embroidery is an ancient art. In museums, a lot of impeccable fabrics and outfits have been decorated with the most beautiful threads, stones and metallic details with images of flora and fauna, graphic designs and emblems that surely denote the luxurious appeal that it has during those times. In the modern times, people suddenly shift their attention to productivity and creation of simple designs that have very impactful results. Embroidery digitizing is a trend that is truly essential to designs and they it surely appeals to the needs of many manufacturers who need a more productive design business but still has a sensational appeal.

Embroidery digitizing is an art form in itself. The rise of computer technology and clever machinery has provided a new avenue for designers, crafters as well as businesses to create wonderful designs that the mind can produce and transform them into digital codes that can be read by the embroidery machine and quickly transformed into a real embroidered art. The appeal of embroidery digitizing helped manufacturers to create complex, seemingly handmade details is easier with the use of the machinery that uses vector images as well as other kinds of image formats that are transformed into stitch patterns where the threads are run down.

Just like in crafts, going to embroidery digitizing does not create automatic results. It is still a problem solving and analytical process that requires a lot of attention to detail, to plot lines that work better for the design, to plot designs that are intricate yet more digitally sound, and to improve some inconsistencies of asymmetry in the analog design. It does not in any way remove the creativity the attention to details of the creator. On the contrary, the attention to detail becomes more apparent because in this case, the creator is more focused on the overall visual look than in the process.

The visual results that are created through the use of embroidery digitizing are certainly stunning and appealing. The attention to detail is present and the great thing is that the uniformity of the stitches makes the designs stand out and pop out more. With these very apparent benefits, manufacturers that rely on embroidery designs surely benefit from these results. There is more productivity to the usually cumbersome task of embroidery. The designs are as sensational although it has to fit to some of the limitations. The overall appeal is just overwhelming as many people and companies rely on this method for their embroidery needs from t-shirts, specialty designs, and other crafts.

Of course it will not take away the very time honored art of hand embroidery. Surely there will be some things that are very different with something that is done by hand. Unique designs that are awfully intricate might not respond well to the more straightforward methods in embroidery digitizing but in the more graphically appealing designs, people surely will never stop going to this method to ensure that the designs can be made beautiful, polished and creative.

Advantages of Outsourcing Embroidery Digitizing

A common trend seen by embroiderer's over the last decade is to outsource their embroidery digitizing work to overseas. Digitizing business actually flourished due to the availability of internet services in the developing countries during recent years. As the communication is almost instant due to the use of email and other internet based mediums, transfer of embroidery files is possible abruptly. I would like to quickly discuss some major advantages of outsourcing embroidery digitizing work instead of doing it in-house.

Savings: Cost-cutting is one of the major reasons to outsource for digitizing services. Outsourcing converts fixed costs into variable and releases capital which can be used to buy embroidery machines and invest in business promotion and advertising. It also helps avoid large expenditures in the early stages of your embroidery business.

Efficiency: A good outsourced firm has the resources to start a project right away. Handling the same digitizing in-house will firstly involve buying a good software that will cost you big bucks. Then taking weeks and even months to hire the right people, train them, and provide the support they need.

Focus: Embroidery businesses are usually small ones and have limited resources. The manager has limited time and attention. Outsourcing digitizing work can help your embroidery business to focus mainly on the work that serves the customer, and can help managers set their priorities more clearly.

Growth and Survival: Most small embroidery firms simply can't afford to match the in-house embroidery digitizing facilities that larger companies maintain. Outsourcing can help small embroidery firms act big by giving them access to the same economies of scale, efficiency, and expertise that large companies enjoy.

Risk reduction: Every business and investment carries a certain amount of risk. Markets, competition, government regulations, financial conditions, and technologies all change very quickly. Outsourcing embroidery digitizing work will manage this risk for you.

Embroidery Digitizing is an Art

The embroidery digitizing takes place when the original artwork - a drawing, design, graphic or picture is scanned in digitizing software to turn it into a digital file that can be used by the automatic sewing machine. Once the original is scanned with the digitizing software, the operator must then manipulate the image in the embroidery digitizing software to tell the embroidery machine how to sew the stitches. The scanned image is now processed through the digitizing software to the many stitches necessary to embroider the image.

While using the embroidery digitizing software, the operator decides what colors of thread to use, any special threads like metallic, nylon, cotton, silk, etc and where they are placed in the digitized pattern. They also determine the necessary parameters of the stitches that will go on the cloth. Some may be very dense, or many stitches, or very light, very few stitches to make the designs. The operator can also determine what kinds of stitches are made, like zigzagged or cross-stitched, as examples. Once all the parameters are selected and verified, the operator can save the file to a small compact disc (CD) or a secure digital (SD) or similar solid-state memory card. Once it is scanned, manipulated in the embroidery digitizing software, saved to disk in a file format that the sewing machines can understand, it is then loaded into the sewing machine to produce the embroidered image.

There are many software for embroidery digitizing currently available. Most sewing machines come with some type of digitizing software, but many digitizing operators choose to use some other types of software that offer more flexibility and additional features than the basic programs provided with the particular embroidery machines. There are many embroidery digitizing software applications available for Windows, Linux and MAC machines and many are freeware or shareware that is much less expensive than the commercial applications, but can perform almost everything the "professional" applications offer.

Once the scanned image is processed through the embroidery digitizing software, the processed image must be saved in a file, however, there are some 30 different file types so the proper digitizing file type must be determined. The operator must select the proper file format for the embroidery or digital sewing machine that is used to apply the embroidery. After the embroidery digitizing software manipulates the image, it is very important the operator use the correct format for saving the digitized file, as different machines require different file formats so they can properly reproduce the original artwork.

The file types are critical in properly digitizing the artwork but owners or operators should be certain of the file type for their machine before saving the file. The proper digitizing file format type can usually be found in the owners manual for the embroidery or sewing machine being used to perform the embroidery. If you do not have the owners manual, you can always go to the manufacturers website to determine the file formats necessary for the digitizing sewing machine being used. The embroidery digitizing file is then saved to the specified storage media, the file is then loaded into the embroidery sewing machines memory and the operator can now apply the embroidery to the material.
